TFCU members Dean (age 91) and Delores (age 88) Burney are set to celebrate their 68th wedding anniversary in 2021. For 51 of those 68 years, TFCU has been right by their sides as they manage money and life. With decades of wisdom on their side, this spunky couple shares their advice on love and money.
After a whirlwind courtship of dinner dates, dancing and motorcycle rides, Dean and Delores were married in Texas in 1953. Dean was immediately stationed in Illinois and served for 22 years in the Air Force as an aircraft engineer, which eventually brought them to Oklahoma.
“All I can say is you got to give and take,” said Delores. “You have to hang in there and take the good with the bad. True love never runs smoothly.”
When it comes to money, Dean and Delores firmly believe you don’t spend beyond your means. Saving for what you want and need in life is the secret to being money smart. Over the years, TFCU savings accounts, money markets, certificates and IRAs have helped the couple reach their goals. They’ve passed their super saver philosophy onto their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with each opening their own TFCU savings accounts.
“Our two daughters, their kids and grandkids…We are four generations of TFCU members,” said Delores.
Over the decades, Dean and Delores have also looked to the credit union for fun and adventure—not just practical money needs. The couple has joined 18 of TFCU’s Heritage Club group tours—making friends and seeing sites around the country. “They take excellent care of us,” said Delores.
Until the COVID-19 pandemic subsides and Heritage Club tours return, Delores will settle for interacting with her TFCU friends at the new Choctaw branch. “I just enjoy going in and getting to talk to the tellers,” said Delores. “They’re always friendly and helpful. I like going in.”
