With the holidays just around the corner, your teen may want to start that first job. Here are some tips to help in the job search.

You can’t always get what you want

Even though fewer teens are working today, in comparison to previous years (30 percent according to some polls), finding that first job is no easy task. Although they may want to work at a trendy boutique or laid-back office, have them apply for multiple jobs that are available for their skill level, rather than just one or two.

Get ready for the interview

Although you can’t sit in with them on their interview, you can help them prepare for the process. Encourage your teen to research the company ahead of time and ask questions during the interview. Talk to them about appropriate interview attire. This will help them down the road when they begin to search for career positions.

Prepare them for after

Once they land their first job, make this time a great teachable moment. When they get their first paycheck, talk to them about saving some of their earnings. Have them make a budget for transportation and lunches. This will help them develop great skills for the future.
