Grant Woldum Cancer Survivor

TFCU EVP/CIO Grant Woldum Recognized as Honorary Cancer Survivor at Oklahoma State University Women’s Basketball Game

February 13, 2015

STILLWATER – Tinker Federal Credit Union (TFCU) EVP/CIO Grant Woldum was named the Oklahoma State University (OSU) Coaches vs. Cancer honorary cancer survivor at the OSU women’s basketball game on Wednesday, February 11. TFCU is a platinum sponsor of OSU Coaches vs. Cancer. Woldum, a TFCU employee since 2003, was introduced before the start of the basketball game.

“I certainly don’t feel like I did anything warranting any honor,” said Woldum. “I am just a survivor who wants other people to know there is hope and there are things we can do to affect our outcomes in life.”

In 1987, Woldum was diagnosed with teratocarcinoma, a form of testicular cancer, after leaving a golf game with abdominal pain. While the prognosis for recovery was excellent, the probability for fathering more children was very dim. Woldum and his wife, Karen, had one daughter and another on the way at the time. After four years of multiple surgeries and treatments, Grant and Karen added two more children to their family.

“It is by the grace of God, the prayers of many people and the skills of an excellent medical team that treated me and gave my story a happy ending,” said Woldum. “It was a pleasure and an honor to participate in the OSU Coaches vs. Cancer program, because my story, along with many others, show that happy endings are possible and there is always hope.”

Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers coaches, their teams, and communities to join the fight against cancer by participating in awareness efforts, advocacy programs, and fundraising activities. OSU joined Coaches vs. Cancer in 1993, and has raised more than $750,000 in the fight against cancer. As a platinum sponsor, TFCU was able to select a cancer survivor to be honored at an OSU men’s or women’s home basketball game.

Woldum was officially declared cancer free in 1991. He said he would like his experience to remind and encourage others to become aware of their bodies and perform periodic self-examinations to promote early detection.

TFCU is the largest credit union in Oklahoma, with over $3 billion in assets and over 300,000 members.
