When Victor Zamudio-Nunez first received the call from Tinker Federal Credit Union saying he’d won a $3,000 scholarship contest, he couldn’t believe it. “I was at Army National Guard training on the shooting range and thought, ‘There’s no way this is real,’” said Victor.
Victor joined the Army National Guard three years ago to help fund his higher education. “I didn’t want my Mom to have to pay for my college,” said Victor. “The military is a good route to go to pay for school.”
After attending community colleges the last few years, Victor is now at the University of Oklahoma where he is going to school to be a dental hygienist with the goal of eventually working in orthodontics. “I’ve had braces on forever, so I can relate to anyone who has trouble with their teeth,” said Victor. “I like that I can help other people’s smiles.”
“We at TFCU are so proud to award Victor this $3,000 scholarship,” said Nancy Ward, TFCU vp/marketing director. “Not only is he a full-time student putting himself through college and serving in the Army National Guard, but also he joined the Multicultural Community Council at OU to help with service projects in the community.”
More than three thousand Oklahoma students entered to win TFCU’s Back to College scholarship contest in 2020. A total of three winners were randomly drawn with each receiving $3,000. As a not-for-profit credit union, this scholarship program is just one way TFCU gives back to the communities it serves.
