This month, high school juniors and seniors across the country will be getting ready for their proms, a special but costly event. According to a recent survey conducted by a Family Economics Specialist for the NDSU Extension Service, a couple attending prom spends an average of $600 on prom expenses.
To cut those expenses:
- Shop and compare prices for everything from the dress or tux rental to the limo. Check outlet stores and the Internet. Last year, more than 5,000 prom dresses were available on eBay.
- Check out vintage stores for a different look, or raid your sister’s or mom’s closet and make a few alterations. If you know a good seamstress, have someone make your one-of-a-kind dress. Guys, unless you plan to wear your tux again within the next year, rent or borrow, don’t buy.
- Come up with creative dinner alternatives. Instead of choosing a pricey restaurant, think of a fun alternative, like a picnic or Chinese take-out at someone’s house. After all, the idea is to make some great memories with friends.
- Have a makeover party and do each other’s make-up, nails and hair. Hairstyles don’t have to be complicated.
- If you must rent a limo, plan ahead and share the ride with several other couples. Better yet, forego the limo and borrow a car or take a taxi.
- Buy flowers at a grocery store or use silk and make your own corsage or boutonniere from a single flower.
