With three daughters ages 20, 18 and 16, TFCU members Kriste and David Day have a lot of parenting advice on money. “We have three daughters and five checking accounts,” said Kriste.
As the girls became teenagers, Kriste helped each open a TFCU checking account. With Kriste as a co-owner of the accounts, she set them up so that they could not overdraft while learning to manage money. Also, the Day family isn’t big on allowances. Instead, the parents encourage the girls to work and earn their spending money.
“I’ve definitely gotten that call when one of them is in the checkout line and they need $10 transferred to their checking account to pay for something,” said Kriste. “We’re trying to teach them that money is not an endless bucket. You need to save it and make sure that you’re covering the expenses that you have every month.”
When it comes to their on-the-go lives, the three daughters use the TFCU mobile app with ease—checking their balances, transferring money and linking their accounts to apps like Venmo and Cash App. With one daughter in college and a second about to graduate high school, it gives Kriste and David peace of mind knowing the girls are heading into adulthood with TFCU.
“We are definitely a credit union family. TFCU is not in it to make money off of you. They’re not in it to charge fees, and they are always looking for ways to make your life easier.”
David chimed in, “It seems like banks want to charge you for everything. Credit unions definitely are set up to save members money.”
